Peter Zijlstra 7dadeaa6e8 sched: Further restrict the preemption modes
The introduction of PREEMPT_LAZY was for multiple reasons:

  - PREEMPT_RT suffered from over-scheduling, hurting performance compared to
    !PREEMPT_RT.

  - the introduction of (more) features that rely on preemption; like
    folio_zero_user() which can do large memset() without preemption checks.

    (Xen already had a horrible hack to deal with long running hypercalls)

  - the endless and uncontrolled sprinkling of cond_resched() -- mostly cargo
    cult or in response to poor to replicate workloads.

By moving to a model that is fundamentally preemptable these things become
managable and avoid needing to introduce more horrible hacks.

Since this is a requirement; limit PREEMPT_NONE to architectures that do not
support preemption at all. Further limit PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY to those
architectures that do not yet have PREEMPT_LAZY support (with the eventual goal
to make this the empty set and completely remove voluntary preemption and
cond_resched() -- notably VOLUNTARY is already limited to !ARCH_NO_PREEMPT.)

This leaves up-to-date architectures (arm64, loongarch, powerpc, riscv, s390,
x86) with only two preemption models: full and lazy.

While Lazy has been the recommended setting for a while, not all distributions
have managed to make the switch yet. Force things along. Keep the patch minimal
in case of hard to address regressions that might pop up.

Peter Zijlstra 1862d8e264 sched: Fix faulty assertion in sched_change_end()
Commit 47efe2ddcc ("sched/core: Add assertions to QUEUE_CLASS") added an
assert to sched_change_end() verifying that a class demotion would result in a
reschedule.

As it turns out; rt_mutex_setprio() does not force a resched on class
demontion. Furthermore, this is only relevant to running tasks.

Change the warning into a reschedule and make sure to only do so for running
tasks.

Peter Zijlstra 704069649b sched/core: Rework sched_class::wakeup_preempt() and rq_modified_*()
Change sched_class::wakeup_preempt() to also get called for
cross-class wakeups, specifically those where the woken task
is of a higher class than the previous highest class.

In order to do this, track the current highest class of the runqueue
in rq::next_class and have wakeup_preempt() track this upwards for
each new wakeup. Additionally have schedule() re-set the value on
pick.

Peter Zijlstra 95a0155224 sched/fair: Limit hrtick work
The task_tick_fair() function does:

 - update the hierarchical runtimes
 - drive NUMA-balancing
 - update load-balance statistics
 - drive force-idle preemption

All but the very first can be limited to the periodic tick. Let hrtick
only update accounting and drive preemption, not load-balancing and
other bits.

Peter Zijlstra 71fedc41c2 sched/fair: Switch to rcu_dereference_all()
With the {rcu,sched,bh} RCU flavours being unified, it doesn't really
make sense to check for just the rcu one. Switch to the _all family of
verification which includes all 3 of the listed flavours.

Notably, this will enable us to remove some superfluous
rcu_read_lock() regions when we know they are inside preempt/IRQ
disabled regions.

Peter Zijlstra 45e0922508 sched/fair: Avoid rq->lock bouncing in sched_balance_newidle()
While poking at this code recently I noted we do a pointless
unlock+lock cycle in sched_balance_newidle(). We drop the rq->lock (so
we can balance) but then instantly grab the same rq->lock again in
sched_balance_update_blocked_averages().

Peter Zijlstra 089d84203a sched/fair: Fold the sched_avg update
Nine (and a half) instances of the same pattern is just silly, fold the lot.

Notably, the half instance in enqueue_load_avg() is right after setting
cfs_rq->avg.load_sum to cfs_rq->avg.load_avg * get_pelt_divider(&cfs_rq->avg).
Since get_pelt_divisor() >= PELT_MIN_DIVIDER, this ends up being a no-op
change.

Peter Zijlstra e38e529974 sched/hrtick: Fix hrtick() vs. scheduling context
The sched_class::task_tick() method is called on the donor
sched_class, and sched_tick() hands it rq->donor as argument,
which is consistent.

However, while hrtick() uses the donor sched_class, it then passes
rq->curr, which is inconsistent. Fix it.

Peter Zijlstra 90dfeef1cd seqlock: Cure some more scoped_seqlock() optimization fails
Arnd reported an x86 randconfig using gcc-15 tripped over
__scoped_seqlock_bug(). Turns out GCC chose not to inline the
scoped_seqlock helper functions and as such was not able to optimize
properly.

Peter Zijlstra d62e4f2b95 x86/bug: Fix BUG_FORMAT vs KASLR
Encoding a relative NULL pointer doesn't work for KASLR, when the
whole kernel image gets shifted, the __bug_table and the target string
get shifted by the same amount and the relative offset is preserved.

However when the target is an absolute 0 value and the __bug_table
gets moved about, the end result in a pointer equivalent to
kaslr_offset(), not NULL.

Notably, this will generate SHN_UNDEF relocations, and Ard would
really like to not have those at all.

Use the empty string to denote no-string.

(Ab)use the static_call infrastructure to convert all:

  call __WARN_trap

instances into the desired:

  ud1 (%edx), %rdi

eliminating the CALL/RET, but more importantly, fixing the
fact that all WARNs will have:

  RIP: 0010:__WARN_trap+0

Basically, by making it a static_call trampoline call, objtool will
collect the callsites, and then the inline rewrite will hit the
special case and replace the code with the magic instruction.

Peter Zijlstra 5b472b6e5b x86_64/bug: Implement __WARN_printf()
The basic idea is to have __WARN_printf() be a vararg function such
that the compiler can do the optimal calling convention for us. This
function body will be a #UD and then set up a va_list in the exception
from pt_regs.

But because the trap will be in a called function, the bug_entry must
be passed in. Have that be the first argument, with the format tucked
away inside the bug_entry.

The comments should clarify the real fun details.

The big downside is that all WARNs will now show:

One possible solution is to simply discard the top frame when
unwinding. A follow up patch takes care of this slightly differently
by abusing the x86 static_call implementation.

Peter Zijlstra (Intel) d9a96cc18b x86/asm: Introduce inline memcpy and memset
Provide inline memcpy and memset functions that can be used instead of
the GCC builtins when necessary. The immediate use case is for the text
poking functions to avoid the standard memcpy()/memset() calls because
objtool complains about such dynamic calls within an AC=1 region. See
tools/objtool/Documentation/objtool.txt, warning #9, regarding function
calls with UACCESS enabled.

Some user copy functions such as copy_user_generic() and __clear_user()
have similar rep_{movs,stos} usages. But, those are highly specialized
and hard to combine or reuse for other things. Define these new helpers
for all other usages that need a completely unoptimized, strictly inline
version of memcpy() or memset().

Peter Zijlstra 33cf66d883 sched/fair: Proportional newidle balance
Add a randomized algorithm that runs newidle balancing proportional to
its success rate.

This improves schbench significantly:

 6.18-rc4:			2.22 Mrps/s
 6.18-rc4+revert:		2.04 Mrps/s
 6.18-rc4+revert+random:	2.18 Mrps/S

Conversely, per Adam Li this affects SpecJBB slightly, reducing it by 1%:

 6.17:			-6%
 6.17+revert:		 0%
 6.17+revert+random:	-1%

Peter Zijlstra d206fbad93 sched/fair: Revert max_newidle_lb_cost bump
Many people reported regressions on their database workloads due to:

  155213a2ae ("sched/fair: Bump sd->max_newidle_lb_cost when newidle balance fails")

For instance Adam Li reported a 6% regression on SpecJBB.

Conversely this will regress schbench again; on my machine from 2.22
Mrps/s down to 2.04 Mrps/s.

Also serialize the possiblty much more frequent newidle balancing for
the 'expensive' domains that have SD_BALANCE set.

Initial benchmarking by K Prateek and Tim showed no negative effect.

Peter Zijlstra f5a538c07d sched/deadline: Fix dl_server stop condition
Gabriel reported that the dl_server doesn't stop as expected.

The problem was found to be the fact that idle time and fair runtime are
treated equally. Both will count towards dl_server runtime and push the
activation forwards when it is in the zero-laxity wait state.

Notably:

  dl_server_update_idle()
    update_curr_dl_se()
      if (dl_defer && dl_throttled && dl_runtime_exceeded())
        hrtimer_try_to_cancel(); // stop timer
	replenish_dl_new_period()
	  deadline = now + dl_deadline; // fwd period
	  runtime = dl_runtime;
        start_dl_timer(); // restart timer

And while we do want idle time accounted towards the *current* activation of
the dl_server -- after all, a fair task could've ran if we had any -- we don't
necessarily want idle time to cause or push forward an activation.

Introduce dl_defer_idle to make this distinction. It will be set once idle time
pushed the activation forward, once set idle time will only be allowed to
consume any runtime but not push the activation. This will then cause
dl_server_timer() to fire, which will stop the dl_server.

Any non-idle time accounting during this phase will clear dl_defer_idle, so
only a full period of idle will cause the dl_server to stop.

Peter Zijlstra e636ffb9e3 sched/deadline: Fix dl_server time accounting
The dl_server time accounting code is a little odd. The normal scheduler
pattern is to update curr before doing something, such that the old state is
fully accounted before changing state.

Notably, the dl_server_timer() needs to propagate the current time accounting
since the current task could be ran by dl_server and thus this can affect
dl_se->runtime. Similarly for dl_server_start().

And since the (deferred) dl_server wants idle time accounted, rework
sched_idle_class time accounting to be more like all the others.

Peter Zijlstra 79f3f9bedd sched/eevdf: Fix min_vruntime vs avg_vruntime
Basically, from the constraint that the sum of lag is zero, you can
infer that the 0-lag point is the weighted average of the individual
vruntime, which is what we're trying to compute:

        \Sum w_i * v_i
  avg = --------------
           \Sum w_i

Now, since vruntime takes the whole u64 (worse, it wraps), this
multiplication term in the numerator is not something we can compute;
instead we do the min_vruntime (v0 henceforth) thing like:

  v_i = (v_i - v0) + v0

This does two things:
 - it keeps the key: (v_i - v0) 'small';
 - it creates a relative 0-point in the modular space.

If you do that subtitution and work it all out, you end up with:

        \Sum w_i * (v_i - v0)
  avg = --------------------- + v0
              \Sum w_i

Since you cannot very well track a ratio like that (and not suffer
terrible numerical problems) we simpy track the numerator and
denominator individually and only perform the division when strictly
needed.

Notably, the numerator lives in cfs_rq->avg_vruntime and the denominator
lives in cfs_rq->avg_load.

The one extra 'funny' is that these numbers track the entities in the
tree, and current is typically outside of the tree, so avg_vruntime()
adds current when needed before doing the division.

(vruntime_eligible() elides the division by cross-wise multiplication)

Anyway, as mentioned above, we currently use the CFS era min_vruntime
for this purpose. However, this thing can only move forward, while the
above avg can in fact move backward (when a non-eligible task leaves,
the average becomes smaller), this can cause trouble when through
happenstance (or construction) these values drift far enough apart to
wreck the game.

Replace cfs_rq::min_vruntime with cfs_rq::zero_vruntime which is kept
near/at avg_vruntime, following its motion.

The down-side is that this requires computing the avg more often.

Peter Zijlstra 4cb5ac2626 futex: Optimize per-cpu reference counting
Shrikanth noted that the per-cpu reference counter was still some 10%
slower than the old immutable option (which removes the reference
counting entirely).

Further optimize the per-cpu reference counter by:

 - switching from RCU to preempt;
 - using __this_cpu_*() since we now have preempt disabled;
 - switching from smp_load_acquire() to READ_ONCE().

This is all safe because disabling preemption inhibits the RCU grace
period exactly like rcu_read_lock().

Having preemption disabled allows using __this_cpu_*() provided the
only access to the variable is in task context -- which is the case
here.

Furthermore, since we know changing fph->state to FR_ATOMIC demands a
full RCU grace period we can rely on the implied smp_mb() from that to
replace the acquire barrier().

This is very similar to the percpu_down_read_internal() fast-path.

The reason this is significant for PowerPC is that it uses the generic
this_cpu_*() implementation which relies on local_irq_disable() (the
x86 implementation relies on it being a single memop instruction to be
IRQ-safe). Switching to preempt_disable() and __this_cpu*() avoids
this IRQ state swizzling. Also, PowerPC needs LWSYNC for the ACQUIRE
barrier, not having to use explicit barriers safes a bunch.

Combined this reduces the performance gap by half, down to some 5%.

Peter Zijlstra c69993ecdd perf: Support deferred user unwind
Add support for deferred userspace unwind to perf.

Where perf currently relies on in-place stack unwinding; from NMI
context and all that. This moves the userspace part of the unwind to
right before the return-to-userspace.

This has two distinct benefits, the biggest is that it moves the
unwind to a faultable context. It becomes possible to fault in debug
info (.eh_frame, SFrame etc.) that might not otherwise be readily
available. And secondly, it de-duplicates the user callchain where
multiple samples happen during the same kernel entry.

To facilitate this the perf interface is extended with a new record
type:

  PERF_RECORD_CALLCHAIN_DEFERRED

and two new attribute flags:

  perf_event_attr::defer_callchain - to request the user unwind be deferred
  perf_event_attr::defer_output    - to request PERF_RECORD_CALLCHAIN_DEFERRED records

The existing PERF_RECORD_SAMPLE callchain section gets a new
context type:

  PERF_CONTEXT_USER_DEFERRED

After which will come a single entry, denoting the 'cookie' of the
deferred callchain that should be attached here, matching the 'cookie'
field of the above mentioned PERF_RECORD_CALLCHAIN_DEFERRED.

The 'defer_callchain' flag is expected on all events with
PERF_SAMPLE_CALLCHAIN. The 'defer_output' flag is expect on the event
responsible for collecting side-band events (like mmap, comm etc.).
Setting 'defer_output' on multiple events will get you duplicated
PERF_RECORD_CALLCHAIN_DEFERRED records.

Peter Zijlstra 0d6e9ec80c x86/build: Disable SSE4a
Leyvi Rose reported that his X86_NATIVE_CPU=y build is failing because our
instruction decoder doesn't support SSE4a and the AMDGPU code seems to be
generating those with his compiler of choice (CLANG+LTO).

Now, our normal build flags disable SSE MMX SSE2 3DNOW AVX, but then
CC_FLAGS_FPU re-enable SSE SSE2.

Since nothing mentions SSE3 or SSE4, I'm assuming that -msse (or its negative)
control all SSE variants -- but why then explicitly enumerate SSE2 ?

Anyway, until the instruction decoder gets fixed, explicitly disallow SSE4a
(an AMD specific SSE4 extension).

Peter Zijlstra af13e5e437 sched: Fix the do_set_cpus_allowed() locking fix
Commit abfc01077d ("sched: Fix do_set_cpus_allowed() locking")
overlooked that __balance_push_cpu_stop() calls select_fallback_rq()
with rq->lock held. This makes that set_cpus_allowed_force() will
recursively take rq->lock and the machine locks up.

Run select_fallback_rq() earlier, without holding rq->lock. This opens
up a race window where a task could get migrated out from under us, but
that is harmless, we want the task migrated.

select_fallback_rq() itself will not be subject to concurrency as it
will be fully serialized by p->pi_lock, so there is no chance of
set_cpus_allowed_force() getting called with different arguments and
selecting different fallback CPUs for one task.

This series introduces new objtool features and a klp-build script to
generate livepatch modules using a source .patch as input.

This builds on concepts from the longstanding out-of-tree kpatch [1]
project which began in 2012 and has been used for many years to generate
livepatch modules for production kernels.  However, this is a complete
rewrite which incorporates hard-earned lessons from 12+ years of
maintaining kpatch.

Key improvements compared to kpatch-build:

  - Integrated with objtool: Leverages objtool's existing control-flow
    graph analysis to help detect changed functions.

  - Works on vmlinux.o: Supports late-linked objects, making it
    compatible with LTO, IBT, and similar.

  - Simplified code base: ~3k fewer lines of code.

  - Upstream: No more out-of-tree #ifdef hacks, far less cruft.

  - Cleaner internals: Vastly simplified logic for symbol/section/reloc
    inclusion and special section extraction.

  - Robust __LINE__ macro handling: Avoids false positive binary diffs
    caused by the __LINE__ macro by introducing a fix-patch-lines script
    which injects #line directives into the source .patch to preserve
    the original line numbers at compile time.

The primary user interface is the klp-build script which does the
following:

  - Builds an original kernel with -function-sections and
    -fdata-sections, plus objtool function checksumming.

  - Applies the .patch file and rebuilds the kernel using the same
    options.

  - Runs 'objtool klp diff' to detect changed functions and generate
    intermediate binary diff objects.

  - Builds a kernel module which links the diff objects with some
    livepatch module init code (scripts/livepatch/init.c).

  - Finalizes the livepatch module (aka work around linker wreckage)
    using 'objtool klp post-link'.

I've tested with a variety of patches on defconfig and Fedora-config
kernels with both GCC and Clang.

deadline class and dl_task() must be false, while when doing
dequeue_dl_entity() the task must be a dl_task(), otherwise we'd have
called a different dequeue method.

Peter Zijlstra 8a5c6cbfe4 x86/insn,uprobes,alternative: Unify insn_is_nop()
Both uprobes and alternatives have insn_is_nop() variants, unify them
and make sure insn_is_nop() works for both x86_64 and i386.

Specifically, uprobe must not compare userspace instructions to kernel
nops as that does not work right in the compat case.

For the uprobe case we therefore must recognise common 32bit and 64bit
nops. Because uprobe will consume the instruction as a nop, it must
not mistakenly claim a non-nop instruction to be a nop. Eg. 'REX.b3
NOP' is 'xchg %r8,%rax' - not a nop.

For the kernel case similar constraints apply, is it used to optimize
NOPs by replacing strings of short(er) nops with longer nops. Must not
claim an instruction is a nop if it really isn't. Not recognising a
nop is non-fatal.

Peter Zijlstra a3a70caf79 sched/deadline: Fix dl_server behaviour
John reported undesirable behaviour with the dl_server since commit:
cccb45d7c4 ("sched/deadline: Less agressive dl_server handling").

When starving fair tasks on purpose (starting spinning FIFO tasks),
his fair workload, which often goes (briefly) idle, would delay fair
invocations for a second, running one invocation per second was both
unexpected and terribly slow.

The reason this happens is that when dl_se->server_pick_task() returns
NULL, indicating no runnable tasks, it would yield, pushing any later
jobs out a whole period (1 second).

Instead simply stop the server. This should restore behaviour in that
a later wakeup (which restarts the server) will be able to continue
running (subject to the CBS wakeup rules).

Notably, this does not re-introduce the behaviour cccb45d7c4 set
out to solve, any start/stop cycle is naturally throttled by the timer
period (no active cancel).

Peter Zijlstra 4ae8d9aa9f sched/deadline: Fix dl_server getting stuck
John found it was easy to hit lockup warnings when running locktorture
on a 2 CPU VM, which he bisected down to: commit cccb45d7c4
("sched/deadline: Less agressive dl_server handling").

While debugging it seems there is a chance where we end up with the
dl_server dequeued, with dl_se->dl_server_active. This causes
dl_server_start() to return without enqueueing the dl_server, thus it
fails to run when RT tasks starve the cpu.

When this happens, dl_server_timer() catches the
'!dl_se->server_has_tasks(dl_se)' case, which then calls
replenish_dl_entity() and dl_server_stopped() and finally return
HRTIMER_NO_RESTART.

This ends in no new timer and also no enqueue, leaving the dl_server
'dead', allowing starvation.

What should have happened is for the bandwidth timer to start the
zero-laxity timer, which in turn would enqueue the dl_server and cause
dl_se->server_pick_task() to be called -- which will stop the
dl_server if no fair tasks are observed for a whole period.

IOW, it is totally irrelevant if there are fair tasks at the moment of
bandwidth refresh.

This removes all dl_se->server_has_tasks() users, so remove the whole
thing.

Peter Zijlstra 4a1e02b15a x86,retpoline: Optimize patch_retpoline()
Currently the very common retpoline: "CS CALL __x86_indirect_thunk_r11"
is transformed into "CALL *R11; NOP3" for eIBRS/BHI_NO parts.

Similarly, paranoid fineibt has: "CALL *R11; NOP".

Recognise that CS stuffing can avoid the extra NOP. However, due to
prefix decode penalties, make sure to not emit too many CS prefixes.
Notably: "CS CALL __x86_indirect_thunk_rax" must not become "CS CS CS
CS CALL *RAX". Prefix decode penalties are typically many more cycles
than decoding an extra NOP.

Additionally, if the retpoline is a tail-call, the "JMP *%\reg" should
be followed by INT3 for straight-line-speculation mitigation, since
emit_indirect() now has a length argument, move this into
emit_indirect() such that other users (paranoid-fineibt) also do this.

Peter Zijlstra 85a2d4a890 x86,ibt: Use UDB instead of 0xEA
A while ago [0] FineIBT started using the 0xEA instruction to raise #UD.
All existing parts will generate #UD in 64bit mode on that instruction.

However; Intel/AMD have not blessed using this instruction, it is on
their 'reserved' opcode list for future use.

Peter Anvin worked the committees and got use of 0xD6 blessed, it
shall be called UDB (per the next SDM or so), and it being a single
byte instruction is easy to slip into a single byte immediate -- as
is done by this very patch.

Reworking the FineIBT code to use UDB wasn't entirely trivial. Notably
the FineIBT-BHI1 case ran out of bytes. In order to condense the
encoding some it was required to move the hash register from R10D to
EAX (thanks hpa!).

Per the x86_64 ABI, RAX is used to pass the number of vector registers
for vararg function calls -- something that should not happen in the
kernel. More so, the kernel is built with -mskip-rax-setup, which
should leave RAX completely unused, allowing its re-use.

 [ For BPF; while the bpf2bpf tail-call uses RAX in its calling
   convention, that does not use CFI and is unaffected. Only the
   'regular' C->BPF transition is covered by CFI. ]

The ENDBR poison value is changed from 'OSP NOP3' to 'NOPL -42(%RAX)',
this is basically NOP4 but with UDB as its immediate. As such it is
still a non-standard NOP value unique to prior ENDBR sites, but now
also provides UDB.

Per Agner Fog's optimization guide, Jcc is assumed not-taken. That is,
the expected path should be the fallthrough case for improved
throughput.

Since the preamble now relies on the ENDBR poison to provide UDB, the
code is changed to write the poison right along with the initial
preamble -- this is possible because the ITS mitigation already
disabled IBT over rewriting the CFI scheme.

Notably there are 7 bytes available after the SUBL; this enables the
BHI1 case to fit without the nasty overlapping case it had previously.
The !BHI case uses Jcc.d32,np to consume all 7 bytes without the need
for an additional NOP, while the BHI case uses CS padding to align the

Peter Zijlstra 661f951e37 sched/fair: Get rid of sched_domains_curr_level hack for tl->cpumask()
Leon [1] and Vinicius [2] noted a topology_span_sane() warning during
their testing starting from v6.16-rc1. Debug that followed pointed to
the tl->mask() for the NODE domain being incorrectly resolved to that of
the highest NUMA domain.

tl->mask() for NODE is set to the sd_numa_mask() which depends on the
global "sched_domains_curr_level" hack. "sched_domains_curr_level" is
set to the "tl->numa_level" during tl traversal in build_sched_domains()
calling sd_init() but was not reset before topology_span_sane().

Since "tl->numa_level" still reflected the old value from
build_sched_domains(), topology_span_sane() for the NODE domain trips
when the span of the last NUMA domain overlaps.

Instead of replicating the "sched_domains_curr_level" hack, get rid of
it entirely and instead, pass the entire "sched_domain_topology_level"
object to tl->cpumask() function to prevent such mishap in the future.

sd_numa_mask() now directly references "tl->numa_level" instead of
relying on the global "sched_domains_curr_level" hack to index into
sched_domains_numa_masks[].

The original warning was reproducible on the following NUMA topology
reported by Leon:
