Mauro's work to include documentation from our Python modules. His cover
letter follows:

It basically adds everything we currently have inside libs/tool/python
to "tools" book inside documentation.
This version should be independent of the other series yet to be merged,
(including the jobserver one).
The vast amount of changes here are docstring cleanups and additions.
They mainly consists on:
- ensuring that every phrase will end with a period, making it uniform
along all files;
- cleaning ups to better uniform docstrings;
- variable descriptions now use "#:" markup, as it allows autodoc to
add them inside the documentation;
- added some missing docstrings;
- some new blank lines at comments to make ReST syntax parser happy;
- add a couple of sphinx markups (mainly, code blocks).
Most of those are minor changes, affecting only comments.
It also has one patch per libarary type, adding them to docs.
For kernel-doc, I did the cleanups first, as there is one code block
inside tools/lib/python/kdoc/latex_fonts.py that would cause a Sphinx
crash without such markups.
The series actually starts with 3 fixes:
- avoid "*" markups on indexes with deep> 3 to override text
- a variable rename to stop abusing doctree name
- don't rely on cwd to get Documentation/ location
patch 4 adds support to document scripts either at:
- tools/
- scripts/
patch 5 contains a CSS to better display autodoc html output.
For those who want to play with documentation, documenting a python
file is very simple. All it takes is to use:

Usually, we add a couple of control members to it to adjust
the desired documentation scope (add/remove members, showing class
inheritance, showing members that currently don't have
docstrings, etc). That's why we're using:

(and similar) inside tools/kdoc*.rst.
autodoc allows filtering in/out members, file docstrings, etc.
It also allows documenting just some members or functions with

Sphinx also has a helper script to generate .rst files with
documentation:
$ sphinx-apidoc -o foobar tools/lib/python/
which can be helpful to discover what should be documented,
although changes are needed to use what it produces.
The parsing of jobserver options is done in a massive try: block that hides
problems and (perhaps) bugs. Split up that block and make the logic
explicit by moving the initial parsing of MAKEFLAGS out of that block. Add
warnings in the places things can go wrong.

Some folks evidently have muscle memory expecting kernel-doc to be under
scripts/. Now that we have moved it to tools/docs, leave behind a symbolic
link to reduce the global profanity count.

The ability to build the docs with an external kernel-doc program involves
some truly confusing logic and complicates the task of moving kernel-doc
out of scripts/. But this feature is not useful for normal documentation
builds, and the external kernel-doc can always be run by hand when it needs
debugging. So just remove that feature and make life easier.
There is still a bunch of logic to build a command line that we never use;
the idea is to be able to output it, but I'm not sure if that is worth
keeping.

Since version 5, I'm using "c:macro" to describe variables, as it
avoids Sphinx C domain to try parse the variable. This makes it more
flexible and easier to maintain in long term.

This is the Chinese translation subtree for 6.19. It includes
the following changes:
- Add block part translations
- Update kbuild.rst translations
- Add more scsi translations and fixes

That's the final series to complete the migration of documentation
build: it converts get_feat from Perl to Python.
V2 is technically identical to v1: the only difference is that it
now uses tools/lib/python/feat to store the library logic.
With that, no Sphinx in-kernel extensions use fork anymore to call
ancillary scripts: everything is now importing Python methods
directly from the libraries.
There's nothing special on this conversion: it is a direct translation,
almost bug-compatible with the original version (*).
(*) I did solve two or three caveats on patch 1.
Most of the complexity of the script relies at the logic to produce
ReST tables. I do have here on my internal scripts a (somewhat) generic
formatter for ReST tables in Python. I was tempted to convert the logic
to use it, but, as this could cause regressions, I opted to not do it
right now, mainly because the matrix table logic is complex. Also,
I'm tempted to modify a little bit the output there, but extra tests
are required to see if PDF output would work with complex tables (I
remember I had a problem with that in the past). So, I'm postponing
such extra cleanup.
scripts/lib was always a bit of an awkward place for Python libraries; give
them a proper home under tools/lib/python. Put the modules from
tools/docs/lib there for good measure.
The second patch ties them into a single package namespace. It would be
more aesthetically pleasing to add a kernel layer, so we could say:
from kernel.kdoc import kdoc_parser
...and have the kernel-specific stuff clearly marked, but that means adding
an empty directory in the hierarchy, which isn't as pleasing.
There are some other "Python library" directories hidden in the kernel
tree; we may eventually want to encourage them to move as well.
Now that we have tools/lib/python for our Python modules, turn them into
proper packages with a single namespace so that everything can just use
tools/lib/python in sys.path. No functional change.

"scripts/lib" was always a bit of an awkward place for Python modules. We
already have tools/lib; create a tools/lib/python, move the libraries
there, and update the users accordingly.
While at it, move the contents of tools/docs/lib. Rather than make another
directory, just put these documentation-oriented modules under "kdoc".

Our documentation-related tools are spread out over various directories;
several are buried in the scripts/ dumping ground. That makes them harder
to discover and harder to maintain.
Recent work has started accumulating our documentation-related tools in
/tools/docs. This series nearly completes that task, moving most of the
rest of our various utilities there, hopefully fixing up all of the
relevant references in the process.
The one exception is scripts/kernel-doc; that move turned up some other
problems, so I have dropped it until those are ironed out.
At the end, rather than move the old, Perl kernel-doc, I simply removed it.
Chinese translation docs for 6.18
This is the Chinese translation subtree for 6.18. It includes
the following changes:
- docs/zh_CN: Add rust Chinese translations
- docs/zh_CN: Add scsi Chinese translations
- docs/zh_CN: Add gfs2 Chinese translations
- Add some other Chinese translations and fixes
Above patches are tested by 'make htmldocs'
We've been using the Python version and nobody has missed this one. All
credit goes to Mauro Carvalho Chehab for creating the replacement.

It's worth noting that this script will fail badly unless one has a

- it places the jobserver logic on a library;
- it removes sphinx/parallel-wrapper.sh;
- the code now properly implements a jobserver-aware logic
to do the parallelism when called via GNU make, failing back to
"-j" when there's no jobserver;
- converts check-variable-fonts.sh to Python and uses it via
function call;
- drops an extra script to generate man pages, adding a makefile
target for it;
- ensures that return code is 0 when PDF successfully builds;
- about half of the script is comments and documentation.
I tried to do my best to document all tricks that are inside the
script. This way, the docs build steps is now documented.
It should be noticed that it is out of the scope of this series
to change the implementation. Surely the process can be improved,
but first let's consolidate and document everything on a single
place.
Such script was written in a way that it can be called either
directly or via a Makefile. Running outside Makefile is
interesting specially when debug is needed. The command line
interface replaces the need of having lots of env vars before
calling sphinx-build:

the only mandatory argument is the target, which is identical with
"make" targets.
The call inside Makefile doesn't use the last four arguments. They're
there to help identifying problems at the build:
-v makes the output verbose;
-j helps to test parallelism;
-i runs latexmk in interactive mode, allowing to debug PDF
build issues;
-V is useful when testing it with different venvs.
When used with GNU make (or some other make which implements jobserver),
a call like:
make -j <targets> htmldocs
will make the wrapper to automatically use POSIX jobserver to claim
the number of available job slots, calling sphinx-build with a
"-j" parameter reflecting it. ON such case, the default can be
overriden via SPHINXDIRS argument.
Visiable changes when compared with the old behavior:
When V=0, the only visible difference is that:
- pdfdocs target now returns 0 on success, 1 on failures.
This addresses an issue over the current process where we
it always return success even on failures;
- it will now print the name of PDF files that failed to build,
if any.
In verbose mode, sphinx-build-wrapper and sphinx-build command lines
are now displayed.
Mauro says:
In the past, media used Docbook to generate documentation, together
with some logic to ensure that cross-references would match the
actual defined uAPI.
The rationale is that we wanted to automatically check for uAPI
documentation gaps.
The same logic was migrated to Sphinx. Back then, broken links
were reported. However, recent versions of it and/or changes at
conf.py disabled such checks.
The result is that several symbols are now not cross-referenced,
and we don't get warnings anymore when something breaks.
This series consist on 2 parts:
Part 1: extra patches to parse_data_structs.py and kernel_include.py;
Part 2: media documentation fixes.
The regex in this block of code makes no sense, and a quick test shows that
it never matches anything; simply delete the code.
No output changes.

The logic to handle macros is split in dump_function(); bring it all
together into a single place and add a comment saying what's going on.
Remove the unneeded is_define_proto variable, and tighten up the code
a bit.

The regexes for the parsing of function prototypes were more complicated
than they needed to be and difficult to understand -- at least, I spent a
fair amount of time bashing my head against them. Simplify them, and add
some documentation comments as well.

The is_define_proto case in dump_function() uses a regex with an empty
capture group - () - that has no use; just take it out.

The "name" regex in dump_function() includes both the tilde and colon
characters, but neither has any place in function prototypes. Remove the
characters, after which the regex simplifies to "\w+"

Both functions and structs are passed through a set of regex-based
transforms, but the two were structured differently, despite being the same
thing. Create a utility function to apply transformations and use it in
both cases.

The special case for __cacheline_group_begin/end() can be handled by just
adding another pattern to the struct_prefixes, eliminating the need for a
special case in push_parameter().
One change is that these annotations no longer appear in the rendered
output, just like all the other annotations that we clean out.

The ErrorString() and SafeString() docutils functions were helpers meant to
ease the handling of encodings during the Python 3 transition. There is no
real need for them after Python 3.6, and docutils 0.22 removes them,
breaking the docs build
Handle this by just injecting our own one-liner version of ErrorString(),
and removing the sole SafeString() call entirely.

When we rename an .rst file, that also changes the URL for the document
at https://docs.kernel.org/ and results in a 404, which can be anonying
for people who bookmark URLs and/or follow links from search engines
and old changelogs and emails.
In order to be able to fearlessly rename individual documentation files
and reorganize Documentation/, add two scripts:
- tools/docs/gen-renames.py : use git to figure out which .rst files
have been renamed
- tools/docs/gen-redirects.py : actually generate .html stubs for the
locations, redirecting to the new locations
The reason for splitting this into two is that trawling git history is
slightly slow (on the order of 20-30 seconds on my laptop) whereas just
generating the HTML files is very fast. This also allows us to cache
the historical renames in Documentation/.renames.txt or add manual
fixups as needed.
Another build series from Mauro:
The goal of this series is to drop one of the most ancient and ugliest
hack from the documentation build system. Before migrating to Sphinx,
the media subsystem already had a very comprehensive uAPI book, together
with a build time system to detect and point for any documentation gaps.
When migrating to Sphinx, we ported the logic to a Perl script
(parse-headers.pl) and Markus came up with a Sphinx extension
(kernel_include.py). We also added some files to control how parse-headers
produce results, and a Makefile.
At the initial Sphinx versions (1.4.1 if I recall correctly), when
a new symbol is added to videodev2.h, a new warning were
produced at documentatiion time, it the patchset didn't have
the corresponding documentation path.
While kernel-include is generic, the only user at the moment is the media
subsystem.
This series gets rid of the Python script, replacing it by a command
line script and a class. The parse header class can optionally be used by
kernel-include to produce an enriched code that will contain cross-references.
As the other conversions, it starts with a bug-compatible version of
parse-headers, but the subsequent patches add more functionalities and
fix bugs.
It should be noticed that modern of Sphinx disabled the cross-reference
warnings. So, at the next series, I'll be re-adding it in a controlled way
(e.g. just for the references from kernel-include that has an special
argument).
The script also supports now generating a "toc" output, which will be used
at the next series.
Here it is the second version of the PDF series. I opted to split one of
the patches in 3, to have a clearer changelog and description.
Also, archlinux LXC image download started working again, so I added
an extra patch addressing texlive packae dependencies.
This series is taking me a way more time than antecipated.
This series as 3 goals:
1. Fix a pre-Sphinx 1.7 PDF variable that got renamed, but
our Makefile still uses the old one that is not supported
since Sphinx 1.7;
2. Fix broken or incomplete texlive dependencies on several
distros;
4. "modernize" conf.py to solve font conflicts related to UTF-8
and non-UTF fonts from [T1]{fontenc} LaTeX package.
Using fontenc with xelatex is problematic, as documented at
https://www.sphinx-doc.org/en/master/latex.html
Please notice that:
- It doesn't pretend to fix all PDF issues. It focus only at the
above;
- there are still distros where PDF builds fail either partially
or as a hole. On my checks, those are due to problematic
texlive packages shipped on such distros;
- it doesn't touch/address/alter anyhing related to kfigure.py.
as such, it doesn't touch/change/improve/drop anything with
regards ImageMagick and/or Inkscape.

changeset f061c9f7d0 ("Documentation: Document each netlink family")
added a logic which generates *.rst files inside $(srctree). This is bad
when O=<BUILDDIR> is used.
A recent change renamed the yaml files used by Netlink, revealing a bad
side effect: as "make cleandocs" don't clean the produced files and symbols
appear duplicated for people that don't build the kernel from scratch.
This series adds an yaml parser extension and uses an index file with glob for
*. We opted to write such extension in a way that no actual yaml conversion
code is inside it. This makes it flexible enough to handle other types of yaml
files in the future. The actual yaml conversion logic were placed at
netlink_yml_parser.py.
As requested by YNL maintainers, this version has netlink_yml_parser.py
inside tools/net/ynl/pyynl/ directory. I don't like mixing libraries with
binaries, nor to have Python libraries spread all over the Kernel. IMO,
the best is to put all of them on a common place (scripts/lib, python/lib,
lib/python, ...) but, as this can be solved later, for now let's keep it this
way.
In my ongoing effort to truly understand our new kernel-doc, I continue to
make changes to improve the code, and to try to make the understanding task
easier for the next person. These patches focus on dump_struct() in
particular, which starts out at nearly 300 lines long - to much to fit into
my little brain anyway. Hopefully the result is easier to manage.
There are no changes in the rendered docs.
dump_struct is one of the longest functions in the kdoc_parser class,
making it hard to read and reason about. Move the definition of the prefix
transformations out of the function, join them with the definition of
"attribute" (which was defined at the top of the file but only used here),
and reformat the code slightly for shorter line widths.
Just code movement in the end.

A lot of the regular expressions in this file have extraneous backslashes
that may have been needed in Perl, but aren't helpful here. Take them out
to reduce slightly the visual noise.
Escaping of (){}[] has been left in place, even when unnecessary, for
visual clarity.

There were two locations duplicating the logic of stripping private members
and associated comments; coalesce them into one, and add some comments
describing what's going on.
Output change: we now no longer add extraneous white space around macro
definitions.

The kerneldoc parsing phase gathers all of the information about the
declarations of interest, then passes it through to the output phase as a
dict that is an unstructured blob of information; this organization has its
origins in the Perl version of the program. It results in an interface
that is difficult to reason about, dozen-parameter function calls, and
other ills.
Introduce a new class (KdocItem) to carry this information between the
parser and the output modules, and, step by step, modify the system to use
this class in a more structured way. This could be taken further by
creating a subclass of KdocItem for each declaration type (function,
struct, ...), but that is probably more structure than we need.
The result is (I hope) clearer code, the removal of a bunch of boilerplate,
and no changes to the generated output.
Versions of Python prior to 3.7 do not guarantee to remember the insertion
order of dicts; since kernel-doc depends on that guarantee, running with
such older versions could result in output with reordered sections.
Python 3.9 is the minimum for the kernel as a whole, so this should not be
a problem, but put in a warning just in case somebody tries to use
something older.

entry.sectcheck is just a duplicate of our list of sections that is only
passed to check_sections(); its main purpose seems to be to avoid checking
the special named sections. Rework check_sections() to not use that field
(which is then deleted), tocheck for the known sections directly, and
tighten up the logic in general.

Callers to output_declaration() always pass the parameter information from
self.entry; remove all of the boilerplate arguments and just get at that
information directly. Formalize its placement in the KdocItem class.
It would be nice to get rid of parameterlist as well, but that has the
effect of reordering the output of function parameters and struct fields to
match the order in the kerneldoc comment rather than in the declaration.
One could argue about which is more correct, but the ordering has been left
unchanged for now.

The code goes out of its way to create a special list of parameters in
entry.struct_actual that is just like entry.parameterlist, but with extra
junk. The only use of that information, in check_sections(), promptly
strips all the extra junk back out. Drop all that extra work and just use
parameterlist.
No output changes.

The section list always comes directly from the under-construction entry
and is used uniformly. Formalize section handling in the KdocItem class,
and have output_declaration() load the sections directly from the entry,

Python dicts (as of 3.7) are guaranteed to remember the insertion order of
items, so we do not need a separate list for that purpose. Drop the
per-entry sectionlist variable and just rely on native dict ordering.

Chinese translation docs for 6.16-rc1 from Alex Shi
This is the Chinese translation subtree for 6.16-rc1. It
includes few changes:
- Updates to the process documentation
- Added translations for network and speculation docs
- Polished zh_CN/how-to.rst
The above patches have been tested by 'make htmldocs'
process_proto_type() is using a complex regex and a "while True" loop to
split a declaration into chunks and, in the end, count brackets. Switch to
using a simpler regex to just do the split directly, and handle each chunk
as it comes. The result is, IMO, easier to understand and reason about.
The old algorithm would occasionally elide the space between function
parameters; see struct rng_alg->generate(), foe example. The only output
difference is to not elide that space, which is more correct.

process_proto_type() and process_proto_function() reinventing the strip()
string method with a whole series of separate regexes; take all that out
and just use strip().
The previous implementation also (in process_proto_type()) removed C++
comments *after* the above dance, leaving trailing whitespace in that case;
now we do the stripping afterward. This results in exactly one output
change: the removal of a spurious space in the definition of
BACKLIGHT_POWER_REDUCED - see
https://docs.kernel.org/gpu/backlight.html#c.backlight_properties.
I note that we are putting semicolons after #define lines that really
shouldn't be there - a task for another day.

This class is intended to replace the unstructured dict used to accumulate
an entry to pass to an output module. For now, it remains unstructured,
but it works well enough that the output classes don't notice the
difference.

Now that "inline_*" are just ordinary parser states, split them into two
separate functions, getting rid of some nested conditional logic.
The original process_inline() would simply ignore lines that didn't match
any of the regexes (those lacking the initial " * " marker). I have
preserved that behavior, but we should perhaps emit a warning instead.

The processing of inline kerneldoc comments is a state like the rest, but
it was implemented as a set of separate substates. Just remove the
substate logic and make the inline states normal ones like the rest.
INLINE_ERROR was never actually used for anything, so just take it out.
No changes to the generated output.

Rather than having other code mucking around with this bit of internal
state, encapsulate it internally. Accumulate the description as a list of
strings, joining them at the end, which is a more efficient way of building
the text.

Putting the floor under brcount does not change the output in any way, just
remove it.
Change the termination test from ==0 to <=0 to prevent infinite loops in
case somebody does something truly wacko in the code.
