Commit b52619f2e8 added a new dlinfo
request type, RTLD_DI_ORIGIN_PATH, to be used instead of RTLD_DI_ORIGIN
which is prone to buffer overflows. With a replacement available,
RTLD_DI_ORIGIN can now be deprecated.
This commit deprecates RTLD_DI_ORIGIN by adding a compile-time warning
upon its use, and documents the deprecation in the manual.
The warning depends on "Enumerator Attributes" supported by gcc
since 6.1 and by clang. A new macro __attribute_deprecated_enum__,
analogous to __attribute_deprecated_msg__, is defined in cdefs.h.
Because gnulib can override system-installed cdefs.h, thus hiding our
definition, the deprecation is conditional on the macro being defined.

If a shared library's constructor calls dlsym and discards the result,
the compiler is free to lower the call to a tail jump. The dynamic
linker then resolves the apparent caller to ld.so's own link map, which
has no l_scope, and crashes in _dl_lookup_symbol_x dereferencing the
NULL scope pointer.
Tail-call optimization is a legal C transformation and there is no way
for the dynamic linker to recover the real caller from the elided frame.
Detect the situation by its observable effect -- a link map with no
l_scope -- and fall back to the main program's link map, the same
treatment used when the caller's address is otherwise unrecognized.
The check is written against l->l_scope rather than against _dl_rtld_map
directly because dl-sym-post.h is also compiled into libc.so, where
_dl_rtld_map is not visible (it lives only in ld.so).
Add dlfcn/tst-dlsym-ctor exercising the pattern. Without the fix the
test SIGSEGVs during dlopen; with the fix dlopen returns cleanly.

Historically, the build system has hardcoded references to `-lgcc` and
`-lgcc_eh`, explicitly assuming the use of the GCC runtime. This
prevents building glibc with alternative toolchains, specifically clang
configured with `--rtlib=compiler-rt`, where these libraries are
replaced by `libclang_rt.builtins`.
This patch introduces a mechanism to dynamically detect the compiler's
underlying runtime library.
The logic works as follows:
1. It queries the compiler using `-print-libgcc-file-name`.
2. It parses the output path to determine if `libgcc` or `compiler-rt`
is in use.
3. Based on this detection, it parametrizes the build variables for
the static runtime and exception handling libraries (replacing
hardcoded `-lgcc` and `-lgcc_eh`).
This ensures that the build system correctly links against the active
compiler runtime—whether it is the traditional libgcc or LLVM's
compiler-rt—without requiring manual overrides.

The existing dlinfo request type RTLD_DI_ORIGIN used for querying the
value of the '$ORIGIN' dynamic string token is prone to buffer
overflows.
This commit adds a new request type named RTLD_DI_ORIGIN_PATH that
returns a pointer to the dynamic string token (i.e. the 'l_origin' field
in the link map) instead. The dlinfo manual is updated with the new
request type, and the description of RTLD_DI_ORIGIN is updated to
recommend RTLD_DI_ORIGIN_PATH instead.
A test for the new request type is also added to tst-dlinfo.

The SFrame provides information to be able to do stack trace is now
well defined and implemented in Binutils 2.41. The format simply
contains enough information to be able to do stack trace given a
program counter (PC) value, the stack pointer, and the frame pointer.
The SFrame information is stored in a .sframe ELF section, which is
loaded into its own PT_GNU_SFRAME segment. We consider for this support
SFrame version 2.
This patch adds the bits to _dl_find_object to recognize and store in
struct dl_find_object the necessary info about SFrame section.

They are both used by __libc_freeres to free all library malloc
allocated resources to help tooling like mtrace or valgrind with
memory leak tracking.
The current scheme uses assembly markers and linker script entries
to consolidate the free routine function pointers in the RELRO segment
and to be freed buffers in BSS.
This patch changes it to use specific free functions for
libc_freeres_ptrs buffers and call the function pointer array directly
with call_function_static_weak.
It allows the removal of both the internal macros and the linker
script sections.
Checked on x86_64-linux-gnu, i686-linux-gnu, and aarch64-linux-gnu.

POSIX reserves the RTLD_ namespace, and this is already reflected in our
conform tests.
Note: RTLD_DEFAULT and RTLD_NEXT appear in IEEE Std 1003.1-2004. Many
systems (e.g. FreeBSD, musl) just define the macros unconditionally.

When audit modules are loaded, ld.so initialization is not yet
complete, and rtld_active () returns false even though ld.so is
mostly working. Instead, the static dlopen hook is used, but that
does not work at all because this is not a static dlopen situation.
Commit 466c1ea15f ("dlfcn: Rework
static dlopen hooks") moved the hook pointer into _rtld_global_ro,
which means that separate protection is not needed anymore and the
hook pointer can be checked directly.
The guard for disabling libio vtable hardening in _IO_vtable_check
should stay for now.

obscure pre-commit check failure diagnostics from Savannah. I don't
know why I run into these diagnostics whereas others evidently do not.

It can be used to speed up the libgcc unwinder, and the internal
_dl_find_dso_for_object function (which is used for caller
identification in dlopen and related functions, and in dladdr).
_dl_find_object is in the internal namespace due to bug 28503.
If libgcc switches to _dl_find_object, this namespace issue will
be fixed. It is located in libc for two reasons: it is necessary
to forward the call to the static libc after static dlopen, and
there is a link ordering issue with -static-libgcc and libgcc_eh.a
because libc.so is not a linker script that includes ld.so in the
glibc build tree (so that GCC's internal -lc after libgcc_eh.a does
not pick up ld.so).
It is necessary to do the i386 customization in the
sysdeps/x86/bits/dl_find_object.h header shared with x86-64 because
otherwise, multilib installations are broken.
The implementation uses software transactional memory, as suggested
by Torvald Riegel. Two copies of the supporting data structures are
used, also achieving full async-signal-safety.

We stopped adding "Contributed by" or similar lines in sources in 2012
in favour of git logs and keeping the Contributors section of the
glibc manual up to date. Removing these lines makes the license
header a bit more consistent across files and also removes the
possibility of error in attribution when license blocks or files are
copied across since the contributed-by lines don't actually reflect
reality in those cases.
Move all "Contributed by" and similar lines (Written by, Test by,
etc.) into a new file CONTRIBUTED-BY to retain record of these
contributions. These contributors are also mentioned in
manual/contrib.texi, so we just maintain this additional record as a
courtesy to the earlier developers.
The following scripts were used to filter a list of files to edit in
place and to clean up the CONTRIBUTED-BY file respectively. These
were not added to the glibc sources because they're not expected to be
of any use in future given that this is a one time task:

Consolidate all hooks structures into a single one. There are
no static dlopen ABI concerns because glibc 2.34 already comes
with substantial ABI-incompatible changes in this area. (Static
dlopen requires the exact same dynamic glibc version that was used
for static linking.)
The new approach uses a pointer to the hooks structure into
_rtld_global_ro and initalizes it in __rtld_static_init. This avoids
a back-and-forth with various callback functions.

The test appears to use _dlfcn_hook@@GLIBC_PRIVATE as a way to
test dlvsym without having to know the appropriate symbol version.
With <first-versions.h>, we can use a public symbol and the symbol
version at which it was defined first.

This commit removes the ELF constructor and internal variables from
dlfcn/dlfcn.c. The file now serves the same purpose as
nptl/libpthread-compat.c, so it is renamed to dlfcn/libdl-compat.c.
The use of libdl-shared-only-routines ensures that libdl.a is empty.
This commit adjusts the test suite not to use $(libdl). The libdl.so
symbolic link is no longer installed.

In elf/Makefile, remove the $(libdl) dependency from testobj1.so
because it the unused libdl DSO now causes elf/tst-unused-deps to

The symbol was moved using scripts/move-symbol-to-libc.py.
There is a minor functionality enhancement: dlerror now sets
errno if it was set as part of the exception. (This is the result
of using %m in asprintf, to avoid the strerror PLT call.) The
previous errno value upon function return was unpredictable.
Documenting this as a feature is premature; we need to make sure
that the error codes are meaningful when they are set by the dynamic
loader.

After static dlopen, a copy of ld.so is loaded into the inner
namespace, but that copy is not initialized at all. Some
architectures run into serious problems as result, which is why the
_dl_var_init mechanism was invented. With libpthread moving into
libc and parts into ld.so, more architectures impacted, so it makes
sense to switch to a generic mechanism which performs the partial
initialization.
As a result, getauxval now works after static dlopen (bug 20802).

Calling free directly may end up freeing a pointer allocated by the
dynamic loader using malloc from libc.so in the base namespace using
the allocator from libc.so in a secondary namespace, which results in
crashes.
This commit redirects the free call through GLRO and the dynamic
linker, to reach the correct namespace. It also cleans up the dlerror
handling along the way, so that pthread_setspecific is no longer
needed (which avoids triggering bug 24774).
Commit 9e78f6f6e7 ("Implement
_dl_catch_error, _dl_signal_error in libc.so [BZ #16628]") has the
side effect that distinct namespaces, as created by dlmopen, now have
separate implementations of the rtld exception mechanism. This means
that the call to _dl_catch_error from libdl in a secondary namespace
does not actually install an exception handler because the
thread-local variable catch_hook in the libc.so copy in the secondary
namespace is distinct from that of the base namepace. As a result, a
dlsym/dlopen/... failure in a secondary namespace terminates the process
with a dynamic linker error because it looks to the exception handler
mechanism as if no handler has been installed.
This commit restores GLRO (dl_catch_error) and uses it to set the
handler in the base namespace.

On GNU/Hurd we not only need $(common-objpfx) in LD_LIBRARY_PATH when loading
dynamic objects, but also $(common-objpfx)/mach and $(common-objpfx)/hurd. This
adds an ld-library-path variable to be used as LD_LIBRARY_PATH basis in
Makefiles, and a sysdep-ld-library-path variable for sysdeps to add some
more paths, here mach/ and hurd/.
The dls_serpath path field, as an array of length 1, introduces
unexpected array subscript checks with some compilers.
GCC versions before 3.0 treat the nested anonymous union as a
declaration of an unnamed type, and not as a member declaration,
so this construct cannot be used for these compilers.
dlerror.c (__dlerror_main_freeres) will try to free resources which only
have been initialized when init () has been called. That function is
called when resources are needed using __libc_once (once, init) where
once is a __libc_once_define (static, once) in the dlerror.c file.
Trying to free those resources if init () hasn't been called will
produce errors under valgrind memcheck. So guard the freeing of those
resources using __libc_once_get (once) and make sure we have a valid
key. Also add a similar guard to __dlerror ().
* dlfcn/dlerror.c (__dlerror_main_freeres): Guard using
__libc_once_get (once) and static_bug == NULL.
(__dlerror): Check we have a valid key, set result to static_buf
otherwise.

The __libc_freeres framework does not extend to non-libc.so objects.
This causes problems in general for valgrind and mtrace detecting
unfreed objects in both libdl.so and libpthread.so. This change is
a pre-requisite to properly moving the malloc hooks out of malloc
since such a move now requires precise accounting of all allocated
data before destructors are run.
This commit adds a proper hook in libc.so.6 for both libdl.so and
for libpthread.so, this ensures that shm-directory.c which uses
freeit () to free memory is called properly. We also remove the
nptl_freeres hook and fall back to using weak-ref-and-check idiom
for a loaded libpthread.so, thus making this process similar for
all DSOs.
Lastly we follow best practice and use explicit free calls for
both libdl.so and libpthread.so instead of the generic hook process
which has undefined order.
Tested on x86_64 with no regressions.

GLRO (_rtld_global_ro) is read-only after initialization and can
therefore not be patched at run time, unlike the hook table addresses
and their contents, so this is a desirable hardening feature.
The hooks are only needed if ld.so has not been initialized, and this
happens only after static dlopen (dlmopen uses a single ld.so object
across all namespaces).
