A string tunable value usually references the GLIBC_TUNABLES (or alias)
environment string, which lives in the environment block the kernel places
on the initial stack. That memory is owned by the application, which may
overwrite it (e.g. setproctitle), so the reference is only safe while no
application code has run (a value coming from the system-wide tunables
cache is a copy instead, but the rule is applied uniformly).
This patch make the lifetime explicit and enforced without copying the value
or allocating any memory by adding __tunable_seal_strings, which drops every
string tunable reference once early startup is complete.
The seal is applied after the only string tunable consumer and before any
code outside of the startup sequence runs.
Checked on aarch64-linux-gnu and x86_64-linux-gnu. I also run the elf
tests on powerpc64le-linux-gnu, loongarch64-linux-gnuf64, and
s390x-linux-gnu.
Add support for [proc:*] syntax where * matches /proc/self/exe
(fallback: argv[0] unless AT_SECURE). Tunables after such a
line are limited to matching processes.
Note that this filter is reset when including a file or at
end of file.
If the filename starts with a slash (example: [proc:/bin/foo]) the
full path must match. If not (example: [proc:foo]) the basename is
matched.
Add support for filtering out AT_SECURE or non-AT_SECURE binaries:

The current THP segment load approach works only when THP is enabled
with always in the kernel. If THP is enabled with madvise in the
kernel, to enable THP segment load in an application, madvise should
be called with MADV_HUGEPAGE on all THP eligible PT_LOAD segments:
1. Define DL_MAP_DEFAULT_THP_PAGESIZE in hugepages.h and default it to 0.
If DL_MAP_DEFAULT_THP_PAGESIZE is defined, assume kernel THP madvise mode.
If kernel THP mode is always or never, there is an extra madvise call
which has no impact. DL_MAP_DEFAULT_THP_PAGESIZE is defined for x86-64
and 64-bit loongarch.
2. Update _dl_map_segment_align to support madvise THP mode. This fixes
BZ #34079.
3. Call _dl_executable_postprocess in rtld_setup_main_map for dynamic
executables and in LIBC_START_MAIN for static executables, which calls
madvise with MADV_HUGEPAGE on all THP eligible PT_LOAD segments in
executable. This fixes BZ #34080 for both dynamic and static executables.
4. Call _dl_postprocess_loadcmd_extra in _dl_postprocess_loadcmd, which
calls madvise with MADV_HUGEPAGE on all THP eligible PT_LOAD segments
when loading an object after they have been mapped in. This fixes
BZ #34080 for shared objects.
5. Set the maximum page alignment on THP tests to THP page size as the
default maximum page alignment may be smaller than THP page size.
6. Add tests to verify that large executable PT_LOAD segments in
executables are mapped at addresses aligned to THP page size when the
kernel is configured to use THP in "always" mode or "madvise" mode by
inspecting /proc/self/maps to check that the mapping address is aligned
to THP page size reported by the kernel. Also verify that madvise is
called with MADV_HUGEPAGE when the glibc tunable glibc.elf.thp=1 is used
and madvise isn't called with MADV_HUGEPAGE when the glibc tunable
glibc.elf.thp=0 is used.
Skip these tests if THP page size cannot be determined or if THP is not
enabled in "always" mode nor "madvise" mode.

Commit a5ec880f80 ("Consolidate pointer
guard to use a relro variable instead of the TCB") moved the pointer
guard to the module-local relro variable __pointer_chk_guard_local and
dropped the THREAD_{SET,COPY}_POINTER_GUARD macros, which are no longer
defined by any target.
Checked on a build for all afftected targets.
Once the pointer and stack guards have been derived from AT_RANDOM, scrub
the bytes and refill them with new random data unrelated to the guards.
On Linux, it uses getrandom syscall (as for tcache_key_initialize), and
fallback to zero the memory if the syscall is not avaiable.
This keeps AT_RANDOM useful to applications while ensuring those bytes no
longer reveal the guards.
The work is done by _dl_reseed_random, called once the guards are in place
and before any ELF constructor can observe AT_RANDOM: in security_init for
the dynamic loader and in __libc_start_main for statically linked programs.

ARCH_INIT_CPU_FEATURES is called from __libc_start_main before
_dl_relocate_static_pie, so any code it runs must not rely on
relocations being applied yet. Two issues break this under static PIE:
1. The cpu_list table held 'const char *name' members, whose
addresses are not link-time constants under PIE and thus require
base-relative relocations that are not yet in place. Replace the
array of structs with a flat NUL-separated name string and a
parallel midr array, removing the pointer relocations.
2. tunable_strcmp pulls in memcmp, which is an IFUNC and is likewise
unresolved at this point. Redirect memcmp to __memcmp_generic in
the aarch64 dl-symbol-redir-ifunc.h and include it from
csu/libc-start.c.

In static linking the IFUNC IPLT (apply_irel for non-PIE, the IRELATIVE
phase inside _dl_relocate_static_pie for static-pie) ran before
__libc_setup_tls and before _dl_setup_stack_chk_guard. When a resolver
is compiled with -fstack-protector(-all) its prologue loads the canary
from the TCB (TCB-canary ABIs: x86_64, i386, powerpc, s390) or from
__stack_chk_guard (global-var ABIs). On the former the resolver
crashed reading an unmapped TCB; on the latter it loaded a zero canary
(no crash, but the check is ineffective). The same applies to a
resolver that reads any thread-local: it crashes on TCB-canary ABIs and
observes a zero-filled slot on the others (BZ 20680). The pointer
guard has the same problem (e.g. resolvers that register an atexit
handler).
Reorder csu/libc-start.c so that ARCH_SETUP_TLS, the stack-protector
canary and the pointer guard are set up before any IFUNC resolver
runs. For static-pie this requires splitting the existing
_dl_relocate_static_pie into two phases so the TCB/canary setup can be
interleaved between the non-IRELATIVE and IRELATIVE passes.
The historical ARCH_SETUP_IREL / ARCH_APPLY_IREL split (introduced for
powerpc so its IFUNC resolvers could read TCB fields like hwcap and
at_platform) is no longer required: TLS is now set up before either
macro runs. ARCH_APPLY_IREL is removed, ARCH_SETUP_IREL does the work
uniformly on every arch, and the powerpc-specific libc-start.h becomes
redundant.
__libc_setup_tls reaches memcpy / mempcpy via _dl_allocate_tls_init in
elf/dl-tls.c, so it requires update ABI specific dl-symbol-redir-ifunc.h
with memcpy/memmove.
Tests added (each fails pre-fix on TCB-canary ABIs with SIGSEGV; the
static-protector variants additionally fail on global-var ABIs with a
"resolver_canary != main_canary" diagnostic):

Revert __HAVE_64B_ATOMICS configure check
uses 64-bit atomic operations on sem_t if 64-bit atomics are supported.
But sem_t may be aligned to 32-bit on 32-bit architectures.
1. Add a macro, SEM_T_ALIGN, for sem_t alignment.
2. Add a macro, HAVE_UNALIGNED_64B_ATOMICS. Define it if unaligned 64-bit
atomic operations are supported.
3. Add a macro, USE_64B_ATOMICS_ON_SEM_T. Define to 1 if 64-bit atomic
operations are supported and SEM_T_ALIGN is at least 8-byte aligned or
HAVE_UNALIGNED_64B_ATOMICS is defined.
4. Assert that size and alignment of sem_t are not lower than those of
the internal struct new_sem.
5. Check USE_64B_ATOMICS_ON_SEM_T, instead of USE_64B_ATOMICS, when using
64-bit atomic operations on sem_t.

Some applications set environ to a heap-allocated pointer, call
setenv (expecting it to call realloc), free environ, and then
restore the original environ pointer. This breaks after
commit 7a61e7f557 ("stdlib: Make
getenv thread-safe in more cases") because after the setenv call,
the environ pointer does not point to the start of a heap allocation.
Instead, setenv creates a separate allocation and changes environ
to point into that. This means that the free call in the application
results in heap corruption.
The interim approach was more compatible with other libcs because
it does not assume that the incoming environ pointer is allocated
as if by malloc (if it was written by the application). However,
it seems to be more important to stay compatible with previous
glibc version: assume the incoming pointer is heap allocated,
and preserve this property after setenv calls.

Use the same code to compute the TLS block size and its alignment.
The code in elf/dl-tls.c is linked in anyway for all binaries
due to the reference to _dl_tls_static_surplus_init.
It is not possible to call _dl_allocate_tls_storage directly
because malloc is not available in the static case. (The
dynamic linker uses the minimal malloc at this stage.) Therefore,
split _dl_tls_block_size_with_pre and _dl_tls_block_align from
_dl_allocate_tls_storage, and call those new functions from
__libc_setup_tls.
This fixes extra TLS allocation for the static case, and apparently
some pre-existing bugs as well (the independent recomputation of
TLS block sizes in init_static_tls looks rather suspect).
Fixes commit 0e411c5d30 ("Add generic
'extra TLS'").
Add the logic to append an 'extra TLS' block in the TLS block allocator
with a generic stub implementation. The duplicated code in
'csu/libc-tls.c' and 'elf/dl-tls.c' is to handle both statically linked
applications and the ELF dynamic loader.

by _IO_check_libio to provide binary compatibility for glibc 2.0. Add
crt1-2.0.o for tests against glibc 2.0. Define tests-2.0 for glibc 2.0
compatibility tests. Add and update glibc 2.0 compatibility tests for
stderr, matherr and pthread_kill.

The 73fc4e28b9 refactor did not add the GL(dl_phdr) and
GL(dl_phnum) for static build, relying on the __ehdr_start symbol,
which is always added by the static linker, to get the correct values.
This is problematic in some ways:
- The segment may see its in-memory size differ from its in-file
size (or the binary may have holes). The Linux has fixed is to
provide concise values for both AT_PHDR and AT_PHNUM (commit
0da1d5002745c - "fs/binfmt_elf: Fix AT_PHDR for unusual ELF files")
- Some archs (alpha for instance) the hidden weak reference is not
correctly pulled by the static linker and __ehdr_start address
end up being 0, which makes GL(dl_phdr) and GL(dl_phnum) have both
invalid values (and triggering a segfault later on libc.so while
accessing TLS variables).
The safer fix is to just restore the previous behavior to setup
GL(dl_phdr) and GL(dl_phnum) for static based on kernel auxv. The
__ehdr_start fallback can also be simplified by not assuming weak
linkage (as for PIE).
The libc-static.c auxv init logic is moved to dl-support.c, since
the later is build without SHARED and then GLRO macro is defined
to access the variables directly.
The _dl_phdr is also assumed to be always non NULL, since an invalid
NULL values does not trigger TLS initialization (which is used in
various libc systems).

triggers a invalid memory access (this is shown with the failure

The kernel version check is used to avoid glibc to run on older
kernels where some syscall are not available and fallback code are
not enabled to handle graciously fail. However, it does not prevent
if the kernel does not correctly advertise its version through
vDSO note, uname or procfs.
Also kernel version checks are sometime not desirable by users,
where they want to deploy on different system with different kernel
version knowing the minimum set of syscall is always presented on
such systems.
The kernel version check has been removed along with the
LD_ASSUME_KERNEL environment variable. The minimum kernel used to
built glibc is still provided through NT_GNU_ABI_TAG ELF note and
also printed when libc.so is issued.
Checked on x86_64-linux-gnu.
This implements mmap fallback for a brk failure during TLS
allocation.
scripts/tls-elf-edit.py is updated to support the new patching method.
The script no longer requires that in the input object is of ET_DYN
type.

After 73fc4e28b9,
__libc_enable_secure_decided is always 0 and a statically linked
executable may overwrite __libc_enable_secure without considering
AT_SECURE.
The __libc_enable_secure has been correctly initialized in _dl_aux_init,
so just remove __libc_enable_secure_decided and __libc_init_secure.
This allows us to remove some startup_get*id functions from
22b79ed7f4.

TLS_INIT_TCB_ALIGN is not actually used. TLS_TCB_ALIGN was likely
introduced to support a configuration where the thread pointer
has not the same alignment as THREAD_SELF. Only ia64 seems to use
that, but for the stack/pointer guard, not for storing tcbhead_t.
Some ports use TLS_TCB_OFFSET and TLS_PRE_TCB_SIZE to shift
the thread pointer, potentially landing in a different residue class
modulo the alignment, but the changes should not impact that.
In general, given that TLS variables have their own alignment
requirements, having different alignment for the (unshifted) thread
pointer and struct pthread would potentially result in dynamic
offsets, leading to more complexity.
hppa had different values before: __alignof__ (tcbhead_t), which
seems to be 4, and __alignof__ (struct pthread), which was 8
(old default) and is now 32. However, it defines THREAD_SELF as:

On m68k, we have a larger gap between tcbhead_t and struct pthread.
But as far as I can tell, the port is fine with that. The definition
of TCB_OFFSET is sufficient to handle the shifted TCB scenario.

Current binutils defines __executable_start as the lowest text
address, so using the entry point address as a fallback is no
longer necessary. As a result, overriding <entry.h> is only
necessary if the entry point is not called _start.
The previous approach to define __ASSEMBLY__ to suppress the
declaration breaks if headers included by <entry.h> are not
compatible with __ASSEMBLY__. This happens with rseq integration
because it is necessary to include kernel headers in more places.

Glibc does not provide an interface for debugger to access libraries
loaded in multiple namespaces via dlmopen.
The current rtld-debugger interface is described in the file:
elf/rtld-debugger-interface.txt
under the "Standard debugger interface" heading. This interface only
provides access to the first link-map (LM_ID_BASE).
1. Bump r_version to 2 when multiple namespaces are used. This triggers
the GDB bug:

2. Add struct r_debug_extended to extend struct r_debug into a linked-list,
where each element correlates to an unique namespace.
3. Initialize the r_debug_extended structure. Bump r_version to 2 for

4. Add _dl_debug_update to return the address of struct r_debug' of a
namespace.
5. Add a hidden symbol, _r_debug_extended, for struct r_debug_extended.
6. Provide the symbol, _r_debug, with size of struct r_debug, as an alias
of _r_debug_extended, for programs which reference _r_debug.
This fixes BZ #15971.

Glibc assumes that ENTRY_POINT is the lowest address for which we need
to keep profiling records and BFD linker uses a linker script to place
the input sections.
Starting from GCC 4.6, the main function is placed in .text.startup
section and starting from binutils 2.22, BFD linker with
commit add44f8d5c5c05e08b11e033127a744d61c26aee

Starting from binutils 2.15, linker provides __executable_start to mark
the lowest address of the executable. Use __executable_start as the
lowest address to keep the main function in profiling records. This fixes
[BZ #28153].
Tested on Linux/x86-64, Linux/x32 and Linux/i686 as well as with
build-many-glibcs.py.
As a result, is not necessary to specify __attribute__ ((nocommon))
on individual definitions.
GCC 10 defaults to -fno-common on all architectures except ARC,
but this change is compatible with older GCC versions and ARC, too.

For the legacy ABI with supports 32-bit time_t it calls the 64-bit
time directly, since the LFS symbols calls the 64-bit time_t ones
internally.

TLS_INIT_TP is processor-specific, so it is not a good place to
put thread library initialization code (it would have to be repeated
for all CPUs). Introduce __tls_init_tp as a separate function,
to be called immediately after TLS_INIT_TP. Move the existing
stack list setup code for NPTL to this function.

It turns out the startup code in csu/elf-init.c has a perfect pair of
ROP gadgets (see Marco-Gisbert and Ripoll-Ripoll, "return-to-csu: A
New Method to Bypass 64-bit Linux ASLR"). These functions are not
needed in dynamically-linked binaries because DT_INIT/DT_INIT_ARRAY
are already processed by the dynamic linker. However, the dynamic
linker skipped the main program for some reason. For maximum
backwards compatibility, this is not changed, and instead, the main
map is consulted from __libc_start_main if the init function argument
is a NULL pointer.
For statically linked binaries, the old approach based on linker
symbols is still used because there is nothing else available.
A new symbol version __libc_start_main@@GLIBC_2.34 is introduced because
new binaries running on an old libc would not run their ELF
constructors, leading to difficult-to-debug issues.
IFUNC resolvers may depend on tunables and cpu feature setup so
move static pie self relocation after those.
It is hard to guarantee that the ealy startup code does not rely
on relocations so this is a bit fragile. It would be more robust
to handle RELATIVE relocs early and only IRELATIVE relocs later,
but the current relocation processing code cannot do that.

position for _dl_relocate_static_pie is target dependent.
For now move self relocation as early as possible on targets
that support static PIE.

Extern symbol access in position independent code usually involves GOT
indirection which needs RELATIVE reloc in a static linked PIE. (On
some targets this is avoided e.g. because the linker can relax a GOT
access to a pc-relative access, but this is not generally true.) Code
that runs before static PIE self relocation must avoid relying on
dynamic relocations which can be ensured by using hidden visibility.
However we cannot just make all symbols hidden:
On i386, all calls to IFUNC functions must go through PLT and calls to
hidden functions CANNOT go through PLT in PIE since EBX used in PIE PLT
may not be set up for local calls to hidden IFUNC functions.
This patch aims to make symbol references hidden in code that is used
before and by _dl_relocate_static_pie when building a static PIE libc.
Note: for an object that is used in the startup code, its references
and definition may not have consistent visibility: it is only forced
hidden in the startup code.
This is needed for fixing bug 27072.

All linkers support __ehdr_start that support static PIE linking,
so there is no need to check for its presence via a weak reference.
This avoids a RELATIVE relocation in static PIE startup code on some
targets.
With non-PIE static linking the weak ref check is kept in case the
linker does not support __ehdr_start.

I used these shell commands:
../glibc/scripts/update-copyrights $PWD/../gnulib/build-aux/update-copyright
(cd ../glibc && git commit -am"[this commit message]")
and then ignored the output, which consisted lines saying "FOO: warning:
copyright statement not found" for each of 6694 files FOO.
I then removed trailing white space from benchtests/bench-pthread-locks.c
and iconvdata/tst-iconv-big5-hkscs-to-2ucs4.c, to work around this
diagnostic from Savannah:

Change sbrk to fail for !__libc_initial (in the generic
implementation). As a result, sbrk is (relatively) safe to use
for the __libc_initial case (from the main libc). It is therefore
no longer necessary to avoid using it in that case (or updating the
brk cache), and the __libc_initial flag does not need to be updated
as part of dlmopen or static dlopen.
As before, direct brk system calls on Linux may lead to memory
corruption.

Now __thread_gscope_wait (the function behind THREAD_GSCOPE_WAIT,
formerly __wait_lookup_done) can be implemented directly in ld.so,
eliminating the unprotected GL (dl_wait_lookup_done) function
pointer.

Building glibc with GCC 11 fails with (among other warnings) spurious
-Wstringop-overflow warnings from calls to setjmp and longjmp with a
pointer to a pthread_unwind_buf that is smaller than jmp_buf. As
discussed in bug 26647, the warning in libc-start.c is a false
positive, because setjmp and longjmp do not access anything (the
signal mask) beyond the common prefix of the two structures, so this
patch disables the warning for that call to setjmp, as well as for two
calls in NPTL code that produce the same warning and look like false
positives for the same reason.
Tested with build-many-glibcs.py for arm-linux-gnueabi, where this
allows the build to get further.

It replaces the internal usage of __{f,l}xstat{at}{64} with the
__{f,l}stat{at}{64}. It should not change the generate code since
sys/stat.h explicit defines redirections to internal calls back to
xstat* symbols.
Checked with a build for all affected ABIs. I also check on
x86_64-linux-gnu and i686-linux-gnu.

The kernel ABI is not finalized, and there are now various proposals
to change the size of struct rseq, which would make the glibc ABI
dependent on the version of the kernels used for building glibc.
This is of course not acceptable.

8f4632deb3 ("Linux: rseq registration
tests"), commit 6e29cb3f61 ("Linux: Use
rseq in sched_getcpu if available"), and commit
0c76fc3c2b ("Linux: Perform rseq
registration at C startup and thread creation"), resolving the conflicts
introduced by the ARC port and the TLS static surplus changes.
