Adhemerval Zanella 25c42d04c4 Makefile: Order the top-level stamp files before the subdirectory fan-out
The archive rules in Makerules list every stamp file as a prerequisite,
including the top level's own, and the elf sub-make evaluates them to
build libc_pic.a for the librtld.map link.  A sub-make can only create
the stamp files of its own directory, so when the top-level ones do not
exist yet it fails with:

  make[2]: *** No rule to make target '.../stamp.os', needed by
  '.../libc_pic.a'.  Stop.

The serial recursion created them before the subdirectories through the
prerequisite order of subdir_lib; the parallel recursion (commit
7cac99621e) does not.  Add them as prerequisites of the object-building
per-subdirectory targets.

Adhemerval Zanella 96a9a09d7d Makefile: Only print the test summary in the second pass of 'make check'
The build-only first pass of the two-pass 'make check' still runs the
static checks (abi, conformtest, installed headers, etc.), and the
top-level tests recipe merged and summarized their results.

An unexpected FAIL there (e.g. check-abi) aborted 'check' before the
second pass ran any built test, and even a clean run printed a misleading
partial summary.

Pass tests-summary=no in the first pass to skip the merge and summary;
the .test-result files persist, so the second pass folds those results
into the one complete summary at the end, restoring the single-pass
reporting behavior.

Adhemerval Zanella 2b13da5e0e Makerules: add 'make check-parallel' to run tests without serialization
The default 'make check' serializes the timing-sensitive test runs: the
threading (nptl, or htl on Hurd) and realtime (rt) subdirectories run
with .NOTPARALLEL and are ordered after the rest of the test run, so they
are not perturbed by competing machine load.

Add a check-parallel (and xcheck-parallel) variant for when that is not
wanted -- an idle machine, or a run where the extra throughput is worth
the risk of flakiness in the timing-sensitive tests (check the
libc-alpha discussion [1] for more context why this approach was proposed).

A new serialize-tests flag (default yes, defined in Makeconfig) gates both
the per-subdirectory .NOTPARALLEL and the top-level run-time ordering;
check-parallel just runs the suite with serialize-tests=no, so every test
program builds and runs at full concurrency in a single pass.

'make check' and its default behavior are unchanged.

Adhemerval Zanella 19e158b7f0 Run check-installed-headers concurrently for each header
The check-installed-headers-c/-cxx tests ran one script invocation per
subdirectory over all of its installed headers, performing about 80
compiler invocations per header serially.

Give each header its own intermediate target so the compiler
invocations parallelize under the make jobserver, recording the
per-header script exit status next to the output.  The .out target
concatenates the per-header outputs in the original $(headers) order
and fails if any recorded status is non-zero, so both the .out contents
(verified byte-identical for all 76 files) and the tests.sum results
are unchanged.

Results on a x86_64 machine [1] from a make check with run-built-tests=no
show neutral results, and on aarch64 machine [2] it improves from 241.574s
to 182.405.

Adhemerval Zanella b6804fb36e Makefile: Do not install the container testroot if not running tests
Every subdirectory tests target depends on
$(objpfx)testroot.pristine/install.stamp, whose recipe performs a full
DESTDIR installation (about 12s and 154MB on x86_64).  The testroot is
only consumed by the container tests, which do not run when
run-built-tests is no, so skip it entirely in that case.

This saves about 10s on x86_64 [1] and 30s on aarch64 [2].

Adhemerval Zanella ef1cb97f69 Makefile: Do not force elf last for the others and tests passes
The requirement that the elf subdirectory comes last in the
subdirectory ordering stems from its lib pass: the rtld link consumes
$(common-objpfx)libc_pic.a, which aggregates every other
subdirectory's objects.

The others, tests, and xtests classes have no such dependency: everything
they consume from other subdirectories is provided by the pass barriers
(others after lib, tests after others).  Keep elf last only for the
object-building classes and let its others and tests sub-makes run
concurrently with the other subdirectories.

With elf no longer forced last for those classes, the Depend edges
pointing to elf (e.g. support/Depend) no longer create a cycle there,
so honor them instead of dropping them.

This improves the make check with run-built-tests=no, specially on
machine with many cores.  Results on a x86_64 machine [1] it improves
from 190s to 181s, while on a aarch64 machine [2] it improves from
298.726s to 243.098s.

Build results remain bit-identical and the tests.sum failure sets are
unchanged.

Adhemerval Zanella 7cac99621e Makefile: Run the subdirectory recursion in parallel
The top-level makefile was marked .NOTPARALLEL and ran the
per-subdirectory sub-makes strictly one at a time in the topological
order computed by scripts/gen-sorted.awk.  Only the compilations inside
a single subdirectory could run in parallel, so on wide machines every
subdirectory's compile tail and link steps left most cores idle, once
per subdirectory per pass.

Drop .NOTPARALLEL and encode the ordering the serial recursion relied
on as explicit dependencies between the per-subdirectory targets:

  * The subdirectories that generate shared files in $(common-objpfx)
    consumed by the rest of the build without explicit dependencies run
    serially, in their sorted order, before the rest fan out: csu
    provides the tree-wide gen-as-const headers, and on Hurd the mach
    and hurd directories generate the MiG RPC headers (every other
    subdirectory otherwise runs a nested make in hurd/ to create them,
    racing under parallel recursion; see sysdeps/mach/hurd/Makefile).
    The first of them also materializes the other shared generated files
    (abi-versions.h, sysd-syscalls, before-compile headers).

  * The edges requested by the Depend files (now emitted by
    gen-sorted.awk as subdir-deps-*) are preserved.  Edges pointing to
    elf are dropped, as the sorted list already overrides them by
    forcing elf last.

  * The tests and xtests classes only run the per-directory test
    programs, which are mutually independent once the others pass has
    built the tree.  They therefore carry only the others pass barrier
    below and none of the csu-first or Depend edges (+ordered_parallel_-
    subdir_targets excludes them); otherwise "make subdir/tests" would
    also run the tests of every subdirectory reachable through those
    edges, rather than just the requested one.

  * elf stays last: its rtld link consumes $(common-objpfx)libc_pic.a,
    which aggregates every other subdirectory's objects, and its
    rtld-Rules recursion compiles into the other subdirectories' object
    directories.

  * Pass barriers replace the implicit pass ordering: others after lib
    (a subdirectory others sub-make would otherwise race to link
    libc.so itself), tests/xtests after others, and the testroot
    install behind others.

  * The threading (nptl, or htl on Hurd) and realtime (rt) tests are
    timing-sensitive and were previously shielded from system load by
    the global .NOTPARALLEL.  With the recursion now parallel, a full
    test run ('make check'/'tests', run-built-tests=yes) orders them
    after the rest of the test run and one group at a time -- the
    threading subdirectory, then rt -- and each serializes its own run
    via a .NOTPARALLEL in its Makefile.  A targeted 'make subdir/tests'
    is not ordered.

    The serialization (the per-subdirectory .NOTPARALLEL and the ordering
    above) constrains only the test run, not the build of the test
    programs; but building and running a subdirectory's tests are fused
    in its sub-make, so under run-built-tests=yes the serialized
    subdirectories would also build their test programs serially.  To
    avoid that, the top-level 'make check' (in Makerules) now runs two
    passes: it builds every test program with run-built-tests=no, where
    the recursion is fully parallel and none of the serialization
    applies, and then runs the tests with run-built-tests=yes.  'make
    tests' and a subdirectory's own 'check' stay single pass.

  * The subdirectory-built files that the top-level libc.so and
    linkobj/libc_pic.a rules list as prerequisites (elf/ld.so,
    interp.os, sofini.os, sunrpc/librpc_compat_pic.a, and on Hurd
    mach/libmachuser_pic.a and hurd/libhurduser_pic.a, from which the
    lib*user-link.so inputs of libc.so are built) get order-only edges
    on the corresponding sub-make with an explicit empty recipe.  A
    prerequisite-only rule would trigger an implicit rule search and
    this level would compile them itself in the wrong context.

  * The install, clean, abi, and stubs target classes keep the
    previous total order via a serial dependency chain.

  * The elf DSO sorting test recipes, run when make remakes the
    included generated makefiles at parse time, create the elf object
    directory before writing into it; the serial recursion no longer
    guarantees another rule created it first.

  * catgets builds locale-specific message catalogs (and tst-catgets
    reads one) by running gencat under de_DE.ISO-8859-1, hr_HR.ISO-8859-2
    and ja_JP.SJIS, but never declared those locales as prerequisites: it
    relied on localedata running before it in the serial order.  Under
    the parallel recursion gencat could run before localedata generated
    the locale, fall back to C, and fail.  catgets/Makefile now pulls the
    locales in via gen-locales.mk, like the other subdirectories that use
    locales in their tests.

Results on a x86_64 machine [1] with default configuration [3]: a
from-scratch build improves from 78.728s to 61s, and check with
run-built-tests=no from 374s to 190s.

On a 80-core aarch64 machine [2] with default configuration [3]: a
from-scratch build improves from 105.251s to 56.703s, and check with
run-built-tests=no from 886.183s to 298.726s.

Build results are unchanged: all 8919 built objects, archives, and
shared objects are bit-identical to the serial build across 7 clean
parallel builds, the installed tree layout is identical, and the
tests.sum failure sets are identical.  i686-gnu was verified with
repeated from-scratch builds.

Martin Coufal 5c28a3cf9f Makefile: add allow-list for failures
Enable adding known failures to allowed-failures.txt and ignore failures
in case they are in the list.  In case the allowed-failures.txt does not
exist, all failures lead to a failed status as before.

When the file is present, failures of listed tests are ignored and reported
on stdout. If tests not in the allowed list fail, summarize-tests exits with
status 1 and reports the failing tests.

The expected format of allowed-failures.txt file is:
<test_name> # <comment>

Since -r in GCC 6/7/8 doesn't imply -nostdlib -nostartfiles, update the

Gabi Falk ded2e0753e Add a test to check for duplicate definitions in the static library
This change follows two previous fixes addressing multiple definitions
of __memcpy_chk and __mempcpy_chk functions on i586, and __memmove_chk
and __memset_chk functions on i686.  The test is intended to prevent
such issues from occurring in the future.

Mark Wielaard ebfd73a80f Make sure INSTALL is ASCII plaintext again
This reverts commit 84e93afc7 ("Switch to UTF-8 for INSTALL") and
reinstates commit c14f2e4aa ("Make sure INSTALL is ASCII plaintext")
and regenerates INSTALL.

It turns out that different versions of makeinfo (texinfo/texi2any),
at least versions 7.0.3 and 7.1, put unicode quote glyphs in different
places (specifically whether contractions like you'd, don't, aren't or
you'll use ’ or '). This breaks the make dist target as used for
(snapshot) releases, which have a check on the regenerated INSTALL
file. Using --disable-encoding generates the same plaintext ASCII on
all versions.

An alternative would be to regenerate INSTALL with texinfo 7.1 and
require at least that version. But that seems too soon while various
distros don't have 7.1 yet. We can try again to use UTF-8 for INSTALL
in a couple of years.

Maxim Kuvyrkov 02976a4a4b Format test results closer to what DejaGnu does
The years of dealing with Binutils, GCC and GDB test results
made the community create good tools for comparison and analysis
of DejaGnu test results.  This change allows to use those tools
for Glibc's test results as well.

The motivation for this change is Linaro's pre-commit testers,
which use a modified version of GCC's validate_failures.py
to create test xfail lists with baseline failures and known
flaky tests.  See below links for an example xfails file (only
one link is supposed to work at any given time):

Simon Chopin 97290559c3 test-container: disable ld.so system cache on DSO detection
When building the testroot, the script runs the newly built ld.so on a
couple of binaries in order to copy over any additional libraries
needed. However, if the dependencies are found in the system cache, it
will be copied over using that path.

This is problematic if the system ld.so and the one built don't have the
exact same search configuration. We encountered this in Ubuntu, where we
build a variant of libc with -fno-omit-frame-pointer for accurate
performance profiling.

This variant is built using a non-standard slibdir to be able to be
co-installed with the default library (e.g. slibdir = /lib/libc6-prof).
Since we have /lib pointing to /usr/lib, any additional dependency
should still be reachable via /usr. However, resolving via the cache
might result in the additional DSOs being copied into $testroot/lib, out
of the search path in the container.

The problem has been triggered by 1d5024f4f0
("support: Build with exceptions and asynchronous unwind tables [BZ #30587]")
which introduced a dependency on libgcc_s.so.1 under some circumstances.

Adhemerval Zanella a3090c2c98 scripts: Fix fortify checks if compiler does not support _FORTIFY_SOURCE=3
The 30379efad1 added _FORTIFY_SOURCE checks without check if compiler
does support all used fortify levels.  This patch fixes it by first
checking at configure time the maximum support fortify level and using
it instead of a pre-defined one.

Checked on x86_64 with gcc 11, 12, and 13.

Carlos O'Donell 547de57e5a Add lint-makefiles Makefile linting test.
We add a 'make check' test that lints all Makefiles in the source
directory of the glibc build. This linting test ensures that the
lines in all Makefiles will be sorted correctly as developers
creates patches.  It is added to 'make check' because it is
light-weight and supports the existing developer workflow

The test adds ~3s to a 'make check' execution.

No regressions on x86_64 and i686.

and then ignored the output, which consisted lines saying "FOO: warning:
copyright statement not found" for each of 7061 files FOO.

I then removed trailing white space from math/tgmath.h,
support/tst-support-open-dev-null-range.c, and
sysdeps/x86_64/multiarch/strlen-vec.S, to work around the following
obscure pre-commit check failure diagnostics from Savannah.  I don't
know why I run into these diagnostics whereas others evidently do not.

Florian Weimer 8208be389b Install shared objects under their ABI names
Previously, the installed objects were named like libc-2.33.so,
and the ABI soname libc.so.6 was just a symbolic link.

The Makefile targets to install these symbolic links are no longer
needed after this, so they are removed with this commit.  The more
general $(make-link) command (which invokes scripts/rellns-sh) is
retained because other symbolic links are still needed.

Adhemerval Zanella 47f24c21ee y2038: Add support for 64-bit time on legacy ABIs
A new build flag, _TIME_BITS, enables the usage of the newer 64-bit
time symbols for legacy ABI (where 32-bit time_t is default).  The 64
bit time support is only enabled if LFS (_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64) is
also used.

Different than LFS support, the y2038 symbols are added only for the
required ABIs (armhf, csky, hppa, i386, m68k, microblaze, mips32,
mips64-n32, nios2, powerpc32, sparc32, s390-32, and sh).  The ABIs with
64-bit time support are unchanged, both for symbol and types
redirection.

On Linux the full 64-bit time support requires a minimum of kernel
version v5.1.  Otherwise, the 32-bit fallbacks are used and might
results in error with overflow return code (EOVERFLOW).

The i686-gnu does not yet support 64-bit time.

This patch exports following rediretions to support 64-bit time:

I used these shell commands:

../glibc/scripts/update-copyrights $PWD/../gnulib/build-aux/update-copyright
(cd ../glibc && git commit -am"[this commit message]")

and then ignored the output, which consisted lines saying "FOO: warning:
copyright statement not found" for each of 6694 files FOO.
I then removed trailing white space from benchtests/bench-pthread-locks.c
and iconvdata/tst-iconv-big5-hkscs-to-2ucs4.c, to work around this
diagnostic from Savannah:

Arjun Shankar b3b0b6916a Set locale related environment variables in debugglibc.sh
Tests and binaries that use locale related functions need to run in the
correct locale environment when being debugged via debugglibc.sh.  This
commit sets up the environment, specifically: GCONV_PATH, LOCPATH, and
LC_ALL for such tests and binaries when they are being debugged outside
of a test container.

Carlos O'Donell 033362cfd7 test-container: Support $(complocaledir) and mkdirp.
Expand the support infrastructure:
- Create $(complocaledir) in the testroot.pristine to support localedef.
- Add the variable $complocaledir to script support.
- Add the script command 'mkdirp'.

All localedef tests which run with default paths need to have the
$(complocaledir) created in testroot.pristine. The localedef binary
will not by itself create the default path, but it will write into
the path. By adding this we can simplify the localedef tests.

The variable $complocaledir is the value of the configured
$(complocaledir) which is the location of the compiled locales that
will be searched by the runtime by default.

The command mkdirp will be available in script setup and will
be equivalent to running `mkdir -p`.

The variable and command can be used to write more complex tests.

Siddhesh Poyarekar 97ff54d2fc Drop dependency of dist target on ChangeLog
We no longer write manual ChangeLog entries since they are
auto-generated at release time.  Drop dependency of the `make dist`
target on the file and document the fact that the latest ChangeLog
entries can be read in the highest numbered ChangeLog.N file in
ChangeLog.old.

The ChangeLog.old/ChangeLog.20 file for 2.31 will thus be generated
just before tagging a release.

Gabriel F. T. Gomes d0bc5b725d Do not use ld.so to open statically linked programs in debugglibc.sh
Debugging programs that have been dynamically linked against an
uninstalled glibc requires unusual steps, such as letting gdb know where
the thread db library is located and explicitly calling the loader.
However, when the program under test is statically linked, these steps
are not required (as a matter of fact, using the dynamic loader to run a
statically linked program is wrong and will fail), and gdb should be
called the usual way.

This patch modifies debugglibc.sh so that it checks if the program under
test is statically linked, then runs the debugger appropriately.

Gabriel F. T. Gomes 6ef1bab699 Attach to test in container from debugglibc.sh
Some test cases are meant to be ran inside the container infrastructure
and make check automatically runs them as such.  However, running a
single test case in a container without make check is useful.

This patch adds a new --tool option to testrun.sh that makes this easy,
as well as it adds a new option (-c or --in-container) to debugglibc.sh,
which causes the program under test to be ran in a container (with
WAIT_FOR_DEBUGGER=1), then automatically attaches GDB to it.

Automatically detecting if a test case is supposed to be ran inside a
container is harder (if not impossible), as Carlos pointed out [1],
however, this patch makes it easier to do it manually:

  Using testrun.sh with containerized test:

    $ ./testrun.sh --tool=container /absolute/path/to/program

  Using debugglibc.sh with containerized test:

    $ ./debugglibc.sh -c /absolute/path/to/program

Note: running these commands with relative paths causes error and
warning messages to be displayed, although the test case might succeed.

For example, with relative path:

  $ ./testrun.sh --tool=container elf/tst-ldconfig-bad-aux-cache
  error: subprocess failed: execv
  error:   unexpected error output from subprocess
  /sbin/ldconfig: Warning: ignoring configuration file that cannot be opened: /etc/ld.so.conf: No such file or directory

Arjun Shankar 81a1fa6cbf Fix run-one-test so that it runs elf tests
The `test' make target passes a trailing slash in the subdir argument.  This
does not play well with elf/rtld-Rules which looks for `elf' without any
trailing slash, and therefore doesn't find a match when running an elf test
individually.  This commit removes the trailing slash from the invocation.

DJ Delorie 97476447ed Install charmaps uncompressed in testroot
The testroot does not have a gunzip command, so the charmap files
should not be installed gzipped else they cannot be used (and thus
tested).  With this patch, installing with INSTALL_UNCOMPRESSED=yes
installs uncompressed charmaps instead.

Note that we must purge the $(symbolic_link_list) as it contains
references to $(DESTDIR), which we change during the testroot
installation.

creation of testroot.pristine, on encountering
LD_TRACE_LOADED_OBJECTS=1 of the form

        libc.so.6 => /scratch/jmyers/glibc/mbs/obj/glibc-8-0-mips64-linux-gnu-x86_64-linux-gnu/default/libc.so.6 (0x772dd000)
        /lib32/ld.so.1 => /scratch/jmyers/glibc/mbs/obj/glibc-8-0-mips64-linux-gnu-x86_64-linux-gnu/default/elf/ld.so.1 (0x7747b000)

tries to copy /lib32/ld.so.1 (which does not exist) into the testroot
instead of copying the path on the RHS of "=>", which does exist,
because the Makefile logic assumes that the path on such a line with
'/' should be copied, when if there are such paths on both the LHS and
the RHS of "=>", only the one on the RHS necessarily exists and so
only that should be copied.  The patch follows the approach suggested
by DJ in <https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2019-07/msg00662.html>,
with the suggestion from Andreas in
<https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2019-10/msg00514.html> of a
single sed command in place of pipeline of grep and three sed
commands.

Tested for x86_64, with and without --enable-hardcoded-path-in-tests;
a previous version with multiple sed commands, implementing the same
logic, also tested for MIPS, with and without
--enable-hardcoded-path-in-tests, to confirm it fixes the original
problem.

Gabriel F. T. Gomes 79ced5a893 Add helper script for glibc debugging
This patch adds a new make rule that generates a helper script for
debugging glibc test cases.  The new script, debugglibc.sh, is similar
to testrun.sh, in the sense that it allows the execution of the
specified test case, however, it opens the test case in GDB, setting the
library path the same way that testrun.sh does.  The commands are based
on the instructions on the wiki for glibc debugging [1,2].

By default, the script tells GDB to load the test case for symbol
information, so that, when a breakpoint is hit, the call stack is
displayed correctly (instead of printing lots of '??'s).  For instance,
after running 'make' and 'make check', one could do the following:

  $ ./debugglibc.sh nptl/tst-exec1 -b pthread_join

Tulio Magno Quites Machado Filho 95da14dac0 test-container: Avoid copying unintended system libraries
Some DSOs are distributed in hardware capability directories, e.g.
/usr/lib64/power7/libc.so.6
Whenever the processor is able to use one of these hardware-enabled
DSOs, testroot.pristine ends up with copies of glibc-provided libraries
from the system because it can't overwrite or remove them.

This patch avoids the unintended copies by executing ld.so with the same
arguments passed to each glibc test.

	* Makefile (testroot.pristine/install.stamp): Execute ld.so with
	the same arguments used in all tests.

Florian Weimer ad18dadec9 Add check for missing wrapper headers
If building on a subset of architectures only, it is easy to miss
wrapper headers which are required by other architectures because
they lack the corresponding sysdeps header.  The check ensures
that every installed header which is not itself a sysdeps header
has a header under include/ (that presumably wraps the header,
and perhaps also adding declarations and definitions for !_ISOMAC).

Also check for the absence of the sysdeps/generic/bits directory
removed in commit c72565e5f1, to make
accidental re-introduction more difficult.
